Frequently Asked Questions

To care for your tattoo properly, you'll need:
Unscented Lotion:
Start using after day 3 of getting your tattoo.
We recommend Hustle Butter or Pursan, both vegan options are available at Liquid Amber.
For those with very dry skin who may be sensitive to Hustle Butter, we offer Bepanthen (non-vegan), upon recommendation by your artist.
Unscented Soap:
We recommend PurSan Soap
Use unscented soap to gently clean your tattoo during the first 1-3 days, can vary depending on the advice of your artist.
Paper Towels
You’ll need a clean roll at home to pat dry your tattoo (not available at Liquid Amber).
Avoid towels as they can carry bacteria.
REST
Plan to go straight home after your tattoo session. Treat your tattoo like an open wound that needs care and rest.
Step by step Aftercare Bandage Instructions for ‘regular’ bandage.
After your session, your tattoo will be bandaged. Remove the bandage after 3-5 hours, do not re-bandage for the remainder of the healing process.
Wash hands thoroughly with warm water and soap before touching your tattoo.
Remove the bandage after 3-5 hours (confirm timing with your artist). If it sticks, moisten it with warm water for easier removal.
Apply a pump of PurSan soap to your clean hands and gently wash the tattoo with warm water until it no longer feels slimy.
Pat dry with a clean paper towel—avoid using towels as they may harbor bacteria.
For the first 3 days, wash your tattoo as needed to remove moisture or "weeping." Allow your tattoo to dry fully before applying a small amount of unscented moisturizer.
After day 3, you may notice some flakiness and itching. Continue to moisturize 2-3 times per day with a recommended moisturizer.
If Your Tattoo Is Covered with a ‘Saniderm’ Bandage
About:
Saniderm is a waterproof, breathable bandage worn for 2-5 days. It protects your tattoo from contaminants and allows it to heal in a controlled environment.
When removing Saniderm, do so with clean hands in a sterile environment, like the shower. Follow standard aftercare instructions once removed.
While wearing Saniderm, avoid excessive sweating, hot tubs, saunas, pools, and sun exposure. Follow this five-point check:
No Leaks: If any ink, plasma, or blood leaks from the bandage’s edges, remove it immediately.
No Water In: Avoid direct water contact on the bandage in the shower; if water gets in, remove the bandage.
No Sun: Sunlight can cause burns under the bandage—avoid sun exposure.
No Redness/Itching: If you notice redness or irritation around the bandage edges, remove it, as it may indicate sensitivity to the adhesive.
5. No Lifting: If the bandage lifts and exposes your tattoo, remove it to prevent bacteria from entering.
Aftercare Essentials: Do’s and Don’ts
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep your tattoo out of the sun for at least 2 weeks. Once healed, always apply sunscreen to prevent fading.
No Soaking: Refrain from submerging your tattoo in water for the first 2 weeks. Only rinse as needed for cleaning.
No Picking or Scratching: Allow scabs to fall off naturally to preserve the ink.
Wear Loose Clothing: Choose breathable, loose-fitting garments that won’t rub or irritate the tattoo.
Stay Hygienic: Don’t touch your tattoo with unwashed hands, and avoid gyms, bars, and hospitals in the first few days, as these can carry bacteria.
Nutrition & Hydration: Support healing with proper hydration and nutrients.
Avoid Cross-Contamination: Always use clean hands to apply lotions, and never touch the pump or bottle openings to prevent contamination.
Products and Ingredients to Avoid
Petroleum-based products (e.g., Vaseline), aloe vera, tea tree oil, Neosporin, Polysporin, and Preparation-H, as these can clog pores, irritate, or dry out the tattoo.
If you notice signs of infection, stop all aftercare, contact us, and consult a physician.
Following these steps can help ensure your tattoo heals beautifully! If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to us for further guidance.

UPDATED July 28, 2024:
Please note: We are implementing the following protocols to keep our clients and staff safe. These enhanced policies are in addition to our existing standards of practice in accordance with Vancouver Coastal Health and WorkSafe BC.
Personal Protection EquipmentMASKS: As of May 12, 2022, we are a ‘mask optional’ studio- this is dependent on artist and client comfortability. .If you have recently been exposed to Covid-19, your artist may prefer you wear a mask during your tattoo session. You may also ask your artist to wear a mask when you arrive to your appointment (they don’t mind, so don’t hesitate to ask!)
Hand Hygiene and SanitizationAs usual, we remain diligent in ensuring we prevent the spread of any disease with frequent hand washing, sanitizing, and routinely wiping down all hard surfaces with hospital-grade disinfectants.
Clients will be offered hand sanitizer when entering and exiting the shop. If you wish to have your phone or water bottle with you at your station, we will provide rubbing alcohol to sanitize these items.
Consultations and walk-insAt this time, most consultations will be done virtually or over the phone. You will be informed at the time of booking your consultation how your artist will be contacting you., or if they prefer you come into the shop.
If your artist has asked you to come in for a consultation in the shop, please do not bring any guests.
Guests, personal belongings and waiver
Please do not bring guests to your tattoo session.
Each client will have a sanitized bin to keep personal items in, this bin will go with you to the station you are being tattooed at.
You will be emailed a link to fill out our revised online waiver, please ensure this is submitted no less than 24 hours prior to your appointment.
When your appointment is finished and you have completed payment with our Front of House, we ask that you please exit the studio to give space to other clients.
Traveling clients:
If you do not live within the Vancouver Coastal Health region, we ask that you respect whatever the suggested Provincial Health travel restrictions are during the date of your appointment. Please make sure to check https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/covid-19/travel/current at least 2 weeks prior to your travel plans to know what the restrictions are. Contact us as soon as possible if your appointment will be affected by these advisories.
We will keep this page updated as best we can. In the meantime, stay safe and please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or feedback.

Liquid Amber Tattoo is a health board approved studio. We have passed health board inspections with flying colours since we opened way back in 2001! The health board inspectors like to make surprise visits about 2 times/ year. We welcome their visits as we run a super tight ship!
All of our equipment and surfaces are cleaned with Optim 33TB which has a one minute claim against: Mycobacterium terrae, Human Coronavirus (SARS), HIV-1, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Avian Influenza (Bird Flu), Salmonella, E.Coli, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus aureus MRSA and other viruses & bacteria*, and can achieve a 99.999% broad-spectrum kill of vegetative bacteria in 30 seconds!. This is why you will see tattoo artists spray their stations down before and after every client and leave it for at least one minute before wiping up the spray. We use single-use covers for all the tattoo machines, wash bottles & clip cords. Single use bed drapes, ink caps, never re-use ink, and single use needles and tube are individually packaged and sealed until the client has arrived. Once used, needles are disposed in Biomed sharps containers and sent off securely for proper disposable.
All tattooing equipment is stored in a clean area and handled with gloves. Water used for cleaning and tattooing is distilled on site and sits in BPA free containers. Floors are swept and mopped with disinfectant everyday. Ink spills or other potentially contaminated areas are immediately cleaned with Optim 33TB.
The sterilization equipment we use is medical grade; Germiphene checks it monthly for proper functionality.
-
Avoid Alcohol: Please don’t consume alcohol before your tattoo appointment, including the night before. Alcohol thins the blood, which can lead to excess bleeding during the tattoo, affect healing, and cause more scabbing that may lead to ink loss.
Avoid Aspirin and Ibuprofen: Refrain from taking aspirin or ibuprofen before your appointment, as these medications thin the blood and can cause excessive bleeding, prolonging the healing process.
Skip Illegal Drugs: For your safety, please avoid illegal drugs before your tattoo. These can also increase bleeding. We cannot tattoo anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Check Medications with Your Doctor: If you’re on prescription medication, consult your doctor before your appointment.
Consider Your Cycle: Some people experience heightened sensitivity during their menstrual cycle. If this applies to you, consider booking around these dates for added comfort.
Eat Kiwi and Pineapple: These fruits contain nutrients that may help reduce swelling and bruising.
Eat a Good Meal: A hearty meal before your appointment will keep you comfortable. Feel free to bring snacks or a drink, especially for longer sessions.

We are currently located on “The Drive” in a ground level (accessible) building with vaulted exposed ceilings and big bright windows. “The Drive” is a culturally driven neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We have 7 tattoo stations, a client waiting area, and an accessible client washroom. The tattoo stations are viewable through the shop windows, for clients wanting more privacy we can set up room dividers.
With friendly, knowledgeable staff, and a nurturing environment, you are in good hands here.

You should not get tattooed if you are:
- Pregnant (although it can be totally fine in most cases, if you get an infection there is a high chance it will spread to your baby). Same goes with breast feeding. Our artists will not tattoo you if you are pregnant or breast feeding unless you have a doctors note.
- Drunk or high. We will not tattoo you if you are under the influence.
You should not get tattooed if you are doing any of the following activities 2-3 weeks after your tattoo:
- exposing direct sunlight on your tattoo
- swimming and/or water activities of any sort, this includes baths or anything where your tattoo would be submerged under water.
- vigorous activity that can rub scabs off or make you sweat heavily (this includes going to the gym and yoga).
- rolling in sand, dirt or mud
Treat your tattoo like an open wound - keep it clean and give your immune system extra care to fight off infection and help your body heal your tattoo as best as possible.
-
If you think your tattoo is infected stop all aftercare and contact us immediately. We will ask you to take a photo of your tattoo and email it to us at info@liquidambertattoo.com
Include this information in the email: Your name, phone number, your artists name, date you received the tattoo, location of the tattoo, what aftercare products have you been using.
There is a chance you may be having an allergic reaction or your skin is just really irritated. Try taking an antihistamine, stop your aftercare for 24 hours, give the skin a rest, don't wear scratchy or dirty clothing against it, and if it doesn't look less red in 24 hours then go to a walk-in or your GP.
Important: If you can't get a hold of us don't wait. Consult your doctor. You may have an infection and be in need of antibiotics.
When you leave Liquid Amber you will have a bandage on your tattoo. Please note, once bandage is removed after 2-3 hrs of leaving our shop, you MUST NOT re-bandage your tattoo for the duration of the healing process!
THE NO NO's: No direct sunlight on your tattoo, No swimming, No water activities of any sort, No itching, No picking, No sun bathing, no re-bandaging, no vigorous activity that can rub scabs off or make you sweat heavily, no rolling in sand, dirt or mud! Nothing that could hinder the healing of your new tattoo for a full 2 weeks!
ADDITIONAL HEALING TIPS:
Do not soak tattoo! Only allow water on tattoo for as long as it's needed to wash.
Do not use any other healing balms other than what we recommend.
Avoid letting your tattoo be in the sun for at least 2 weeks. New tattoos can burn easily. Also, please note, some inks can cause a histamine reaction due to a foreign substance in your skin and you may experience slight irritation on your tattoo months after it's healed. Make sure you're wearing sunscreen while in the sun to protect your tattoo from fading!
Don’t let any one (including yourself) touch your tattoo with dirty hands.
Wear loose clothing to avoid rubbing and irritation of the tattoo. (This includes bras in some cases ladies!)
Small amounts of color may leak onto clothing or sheets for the first few days this is normal. It will stain! We recommend black cotton.
Do not re-bandage! Air needs to get to your tattoo to heal properly. If you are working in a dusty environment please wear long sleeves or clothing that loosely covers you new tattoo.
If you are doing any sports regularly, it's best to wait until they are over to get tattooed.
We do not recommend going to bars, gyms or hospitals for the initial stages of healing as these places carry many strains of bacteria.
Elevation, nutrition and fluids are essential after a tattoo, so be good to your body.
Be careful not to cross contaminate your lotions and creams! Clean fingers and never touch ends of the pump on containers.
When you are in shower avoid getting soap, hair shampoo, conditioner, hair dye or any other cleaning products on the tattoo other than the Simple Cleanse soap recommended.
DO NOT use any antibiotic ointments, aloe vera, preparation-h, bees wax, citric acid, tea tree oil, canuba or candilla wax, oleic acid, coconut oil, alcohol, lemon grass or old bottles of lotion hanging around your house. All of these products can hinder in the healing of tattoos.

Our minimum charge is a 1 hour minimum, rate will depend on which artist you book in with.
-
Touch-Up Policy
To schedule a touch-up appointment, please email info@liquidambertattoo.com with current, healed photos of your tattoo. We will forward the photos to your original tattoo artist for review.
Important Notes:
A $55 supply fee will apply for all touch-ups done within 6 months of your last session, with the same artist who originally did your tattoo.
If your original artist is no longer with our studio, including guest artists, we may be able to arrange for another artist to perform the touch-up at their hourly rate.
Touch-ups beyond 6 months from your last tattoo session will also be charged at the artist's hourly rate.
For tattoos on feet, hands, and necks, touch-ups will always be charged at the artist’s hourly rate.
-
We always give disclaimers to our clients that hands, fingers, feet and necks are harder areas to tattoo and don't tend to heal very well. A good rule of thumb to consider is if you want your tattoo to look good, choose a different spot. If you are still adamant about having your tattoo on your hand, foot or neck feel free to email us your idea, just keep in mind, it is very likely you will require one or more touch-ups (we do not offer free touch-ups in these areas). If you are still sure you want the tattoo on your hand, finger, foot or neck, and if we have an artist available to do the piece for you.
Please note: Not all artists at our shop will tattoo these areas if you are not already committed to visible tattoos, especially if it is your first tattoo.
-
If we have time and a suitable artist for your idea, we are happy to take a walk-in or last minute appointment! However, it’s best to call the shop or send in a tattoo request form if you are looking for a last minute tattoo appointment so we can assess before you come in if we have an artist available for you.
-
Upon reviewing your tattoo request form, the artist will assess if a consultation is required or not. Most often, consultations are recommended for anyone seeking a custom design, but if you have provided information and reference images that are clear to the artist- they may forgo the consultation process. Consultations generally last 10-30 minutes, and allow you the opportunity to discuss your idea with an artist directly. Currently, to restrict the amount of people in the shop due to Covid-19, most of our artists are doing phone, email, or video call consultations.
Please note that while the actual consultation appointment is free of cost, most of our artists do charge drawing fees if you wish to see the drawing prior to the tattoo appointment, which range from $20-$200 (payable in cash or etransfer directly to the artist) at the time of the consultation. The reason drawing fees are charged is because our artists put a lot of time into designing each piece, and some can even take several days to complete. Your artist will advise you at the the consultation if a drawing fee is required.
-
We kindly request that you do not bring a guest with you. This is due to limited space in the tattoo station area and our waiting area is just enough space for clients throughout the day.
If you need to bring someone for support (ie. medical or translation) please let us know upon booking an appointment. Please note that we are an 18+ establishment; this is not an ideal environment for children or babies. We appreciate that you keep this in mind. Thank you! -
Everyone has a different threshold for pain and so everyone has a different experience. For the most part, it is never as bad as people build it up to be, or your friends will lead you to believe. People have described the sensation as similar to a cat's scratch or bad sunburn, and most find it more annoying than anything (especially given that you're required to sit still for a length of time).
Tips to deal with the pain:
- with a relaxed body and mind, you will be able to handle the pain better than being tense and stressed. Just breathe, and find calm....really...that is the best way to deal with the pain!
- please avoid taking any pain killers as they may alter the consistency of your blood which can effect the tattoo and aftercare process.
- eating lots of pineapple the week leading up to your tattoo may help to lessen swelling and bruising. -
At Liquid Amber Tattoo we take pride in offering a vegan friendly tattoo experience from start to finish. We've had many inquiries on vegan tattoos over the last few months and have done research and made some changes at our shop to accommodate to these requests. When arriving for your tattoo appointment, remind us of your interest in vegan friendly tattooing and we can confirm that the artist will use all vegan products.
Though most of our tattooing equipment is vegan there remains some non-vegan products in our shop like Vaseline, but we have taken steps to be able to offer a fully vegan tattoo process including switching over our stencil paper to vegan transfer paper and using Hustle Butter instead of Vaseline (when requested).
Now for the permanent stuff: Most inks that our artists use is from "Eternal Ink". Their ink products are water-based pigments made using organic, vegan-friendly and non-toxic ingredients. We also use “Fusion Ink”, which is made with organic pigment that is completely vegan safe. The other inks that we use are “Intense” & “Starbrite” which are listed as vegan on numerous websites, however, it’s always important to inquire directly with the company on specific colours as new ink is constantly being developed.
After Care: Caring for your tattoo is the most important step to retaining a beautiful and bright tattoo. We currently carry vegan soap and moisturizer for all your aftercare steps.
Recommended Cleanser: PurSan is a gentle vegan cleanser manufactured in Canada under aseptic cGMP guidelines, and strict Quality-assurance standards in compliance with Health Canada and FDA regulations. This cleanser is specially formulated to clean and moisturize as part of an aftercare regimen for fresh tattoos and piercings.

It contain chloroxylenol (PCMX) is a proven antimicrobial ingredient shown to be effective against bacteria and viruses without burning or irritating the skin. Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (Hypromellose) is an ultra-high grade lubricant ideal for sensitive skin.
Recommended Moisturizer: Hustle Butter Deluxe vegan tattoo aftercare cream is made from only the finest ingredients: Shea, Mango and Aloe Butters, Coconut, Sunflower and Rice Bran Oils, Rosemary Oleoresin, Green Tea, Vitamin E Complex & Mint Arvenis Essential Oil. Check out the blog we wrote on white ink tattoos here!
If one of our artists agrees to do a white ink tattoo it's generally when they are only done with simple lines. This is for the following reasons: over time your skins pigment overpowers that of the white ink pigment, the sun can easily cause the white pigment to do the above faster due to your skin's darkening pigment. In most cases, white ink tattoos tend to completely disappear or appear as a scar.
Body lotions, chemical sunscreens and sunshine are all notorious for affecting white ink tattoos. It’s very common for people to experience allergic reactions with white ink and some continue to have these reactions while in the sun years after the tattoo has been healed.
On the contrary, white ink is best used diluted with other pigments or in small highlights on fair skin.
"I have a lot of heavy black work and I’d like to tattoo white ink on top of it and embellish my black work, is this possible?"
It depends on the tattoo, how you heal, and how you take care of the tattoo as to how this could end up looking. Book a consult with one of our artists and we can see if there’s a way for us to accommodate your concept.
-
UV ink (glow in the dark ink) has changed over the years, and it's probably better than it was when it first came out, but it hasn't been out long enough for us not to have concerns over the long term effects and if it's safe in the skin. Because of this, none of our artists have or will use UV ink.
-
If you can avoid using numbing cream, that is ideal! Mostly because it is really unpredictable as to how your skin will react to it. More often than not, numbing cream makes the skin super spongy and it is harder to tattoo as it does not absorb the ink as well. If you know that you can’t tolerate tattoo pain very well, then some numbing cream could help you, but keep in mind it may end up costing more money if it affects the consistency of your skin and takes the tattoo artist longer to tattoo you.
If you are sure that you will not be able to handle the pain, the best creams on the market that we know of are Emla Cream and TKTX Cream. Please email us if you are thinking about using these creams as your artist may have specific instructions for these products.
We also have Bactine in the shop which has Lidocain in it (the stuff that numbs) that can be used once the skin is broken, however, this only lasts usually 15 minutes and can sometimes affect how the tattoo heals - the use of Bactine is up to your artist’s discretion.
Overall, if you can avoid numbing products, that is the best option! But if you have been tattooed before and know that you need some relief to get through the session, then please email us to let us know and we will check with your artist on the best option for the style of tattoo you are getting.
-
Blood thinners or aspirin may affect your tattoo during the tattooing process and during the time your fresh tattoo is healing. This is due to the fact that blood thinners decrease your blood’s ability to clot efficiently. Given these facts, your tattoo may require one or multiple touch-ups in order for your body to let it heal properly.
Before considering getting a tattoo with one of our artists,we recommend consulting with your doctor prior to booking an appointment if you are on any type of blood thinner medication. We do not recommend stopping the use of any medication without your doctor’s advice beforehand. If your doctor has given you the OK to get tattooed while taking blood thinners and if your tattoo requires a touch-up, a fee of $45 +tax may be required upon artist discretion.
