Artist Spotlight: Jin O

Welcome to part 3 of “Artist Spotlight”, an ongoing blog series recognizing artists from a variety of communities.

The following interview is conducted and written by Peach, one of the team members here at Liquid Amber.

P- Hey Jin! I'd love to ask you a few questions that I would be sharing with some of the other folks who may want to get to know about you and your art more!

Can you share with us your history as an artist? ie) When did you start your career as a professional artist? Did you always know you wanted to be a tattoo artist? Where else have you showcased your work, and in what mediums?

J- Hey Peach, of course! First of all, I was born in Korea. I started drawing and painting from a young age, it came very naturally to me. Painting has always been a major passion of mine as well as illustrations for books and even painting murals. I then was able to graduate from a fine art university, from there I lived in all different countries such as England, Australia and now Canada! My art has led me to now tattooing as my full time job.

P- What inspired you to do this new showcase, 'Tattooed Girls' ?

J- Well, to occupy my time I spent a lot of my time painting during the COVID-19 lockdown of last year. I had plenty of time in my hands all of a sudden and instead of getting upset or frustrated, I decided to create art. Here are a few of my pieces that I came up with during this time!

‘Beautiful Death’
We cannot run away from ‘death’ , it's always among us. Life is beautiful because it’s limited. We should accept death.

‘Falling’
We all feel fear, frustration, depression from this time during COVID. I think we should accept it as it is and shed ourselves from the high tension. Let’s fall, you never know, we might reach a beautiful ocean.

‘Tattooed girl’

As a tattooist I live around so many tattooed ladies. Tattoos reflect their personality, they all have their own stories, and can also display beautiful decorations of the body. My series so far has been 'tattooed girl'.

‘Birds’ Everyone wants to fly, right? I love to think about feelings of nearly zero gravity, freely moving around.

P- These are all such incredible works of art! I especially love the portraits of our fellow coworkers. The way you captured them and their tattoos is pure talent.

Can you let us know if you have any advice for aspiring artists?

J- All media sources can inspire us. For example,I love films, I feel all great films give me huge inspiration for my creativity.

P- Thank you so much for sharing with us Jin, it's been so great getting to know you as a tattoo artist here at Liquid Amber, and seeing the beautiful pieces that you come up with! We wish you the best on your next chapter in Australia!
